An outback psychological thriller.
The soundtrack for The Girl in the Shadows was built almost entirely from instruments you would find in an outback shed.
That was the rule we set ourselves before writing a note: rusty, broken, holding onto their last moments before falling apart. Metallic bows drawn across corrugated iron. Percussion cut from the resonating wood of an old upright piano. Dusty autoharps for the gritty rhythms. Rainsticks and percussion made from playing Australian trees. If the town in this film keeps a secret, we wanted the instruments to sound like they had been keeping it too.
Written by Stephen Knight and shot in Tamworth, New South Wales. The film follows Shelly, an embattled detective confronts her traumatic past when a murder investigation reveals connections to a childhood tragedy, forcing her to choose between justice and vengeance.
